Electric Shocks

by Squims, Jan 24, 2003 12:00AM
I’ve suffered from the full range of bizarre heartbeats over the last year (Pauses, extra heartbeats, double heartbeats etc).  For this I’m to be evaluated with a holter monitor within the next few weeks.  Although I don’t want to speculate too much at this point, I’d like to address a fear that I have, and would appreciate your input.

Are there any neurological problems that would result in an increase or change in the amount of electricity that a person might produce?  Can Serotonin Re-uptake Medication effect electrical conduction through the body even when discontinued?

My specific problem is that something may be causing a rhythm disturbance, and all I have to go on is that I keep getting little electric shocks from things like cars and door handles.

Thanks in advance

I understand what you're saying about "increased electricity," but I've never heard of any medications or neurological diseases that can do that.  That's not to say that there isn't any, but it's just not been reported before.  As for the antidepressants, the SSRIs or serotonin reuptake meds have been known to cause irregular heart rhythms, but again I don't know of them causing increased production of electricity.

The holter monitor should be helpful to you doctor in capturing the irregular heart rhythm and making the right diagnosis so you can get the appropriate treatment. Good luck.

Yes, the shocks and strainge feeling across your chest can be caued by meds like Effexor.  I know first hand! I take effexor  (antidepressent)for Depression the was increased for Fibromyalgia. I now have had unusual periods now for three months.  I am waiting for a second sonogram, BUT want off the Effexor. See, I have many problems, but all my test results come back fine.  Iritis, both eyes, blurry vision, sparks in right eye, left eye painful to look around. Shakiness in both hands, weakness in both hands, muscle shake or twitch in arms, torso, legs, HOT all the time, sweat pours off of me. Legs shake at times so bad my 6yo will lay herself on them to make them stop. Muscle cramps in calfs at times or muscle just twitch or shake, tired, severe dizzines, mind so bad I don't drive any more, I am a 31 yo mother of two. Easy to catch colds, get infections in fingernail beds. My real problem is when I get too hot.  If the shower is too hot, I turn into a noodle, or if I cook and it gets too hot, or if I eat really hot food, I turn into a noodle. I stager, especially if I go grocery shopping, by the time I'm done I have NO strength.  But, my MRI is normal so I have FibroMyalgia.  I think for sure MS!  My brother was so ill for almost two years before they diagnosed him with Myasthenia Gravis.  Two times with EMG's they gave him a shot that increases your strength, 2 Times, and he failed, but yet still was dying from the disease.  Now me, and it's fibro, "just excersize" I can't I get too hot!!  Does anyone else feel this way, and if so, WHAT SHOULD I DO!!  Thanks a bunch! MistiBlue,

I have many of your symptoms.  I just posted a question asking if it could be fibromyalgia.  I took experience the "bad mind" that you are talking about.  I'm 24 years old.  E-mail me at lisa.***@****

I'd like to compare notes.  I took Celexa and Zoloft over two years ago for depression, but have been off them for almost a year.  I have most of your symptoms.

hi guys i have not been on this forum before i am mostly on the gastro forum but i was reading your post and thought i might be able to help a little.first off let me start by saying i am a fibromyalgia patient not to mention god knows how many other health probs including lesion on left temporal lobe that's causing epilepsy(seizures)that they wnt to do surgery on ,that is the reason for my visit to this forum. but that is  a horse of a different color.to get to the point, does your body and joints  ache a lot ? do you have bowel probs ? and my next question is, have you had blood work to confirm fibromyalgia and if so did they send you to a rhumetologist(hope the spelling is correct)your best bet is to go to a gastro specialest and if he finds you have fibromyalgia he will send you to a rhumetologist because believe it or not it falls into that medical specialty also.weakness in legs and arms being tired, depression and ibs and other digestive probs is said to go along with fibromyalgia not to mention hep c which i contracted during one of my surgeries (most people that have hep c no matter how they contract it are never diagnosed. i would ask for blood work on it rather you think you have it or not to rule it out )as for the blurred vision sparks in eyes and different nerve probs realated, sounds more like a neuro problem which a mri with contrast and a eeg should be able to help in answering your questions in that area. get a good neuro some like to put you off you need to stand strong in the area of being active in your health care rather it makes a couple of doctors mad or not .i am glad i did or i may not have been here to fight another day .if you have any questions i may be able to answer please fill free to ask .(remember this is just based on my own exp. you need to seek the advice of  specialest).    by the way when they got to the bottom of one of my digestive probs they had to remove part of my colon. so always keep your will strong .god bless you both and i hope everything works out ok for you both.wishing you well

Squims,

You may want to check out information on serotonin withdrawal symptoms. I experienced the same thing when I stopped taking Effexor. It was very uncomfortable. My doctor readjusted my withdrawal time to a more "step-down" process, which helped. I also experienced the same feeling slightly when stopping Celexa. However, now I'm on Lexapro (Forest Lab's cleaned up version of Celexa) and am not having the electrical shock feeling.

Best of luck!
