6 year old girl with multiple bladder problems

by MomTimes2, May 12, 2003 12:00AM
I have a 6 yo daughter with bladder problems (constant infections, thickened bladder).  She has been hospitalized numerous times for kidney infections.  She had ureter re-implant surgery done on 5/16/02 for reflux of the right kidney but has since been hospitalized twice in April of this year for kidney infection and had about 5 other uti's not requiring hospitalization since the surgery.  She currently has another uti, 3 days from the end of her high dose antibiotics and starting her prophylactic antibiotics.  Her VCUG's never showed reflux but was found during cystoscopy to try and detect other bladder problems (thickened bladder).  She is also taking Cardura(this is suppose to help relax the bladder and she didn't have any luck with ditropan).  She has never been totally "dry" even though she didn't receive her first known uti until she was 4 1/2 years old.  The reason I am posting here though is because she has had other medical problems in the past and I am wondering if these could be somehow related.  Torticollis (rt side), amblyopia (rt eye), occasional rt. leg pain and back pain(Everything on the right side of her body).  My sis-in-law (RN) suggested that I let you know that she does have a Mole (size of pencil eraser tip) on her lower spine but does not seem to bother her.  I am assuming her back pains has been caused by the infections. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

It's possible that there may be something going on in the lower spinal cord, perhaps something that she was born with.  Your sister-in-law's suggestion was helpful in that sometimes children born with spinal cord defects can have skin markings or abnormal dimpling with tufts of hair over the lower back.  This may explain her urinary problems if there is abnormal transmission of nerve impulses from the cord to the bladder.  Consider getting a peds neuro consult and an MRI of the lower spine. Good luck.
