cervical radiculopathy/transphenoidal nerve block

by jombi, Jun 13, 2003 12:00AM
I have been presented with an option of a transphenoidal nerve block and would like to know more about the procedure, i.e. risks/benefits and how exactly it is performed.  I had a cervical spine injury and am awaiting possible surgery.

Thanks so much for your help.  sm

I'm not quite sure if you have the correct term and consulted one of my anesthesia colleagues who agrees that they;ve never heard of that type of procedure. What type of surgery are you undergoing and where is this to be done? Would be happy to answer on the string as a comment with more info.

forgive me for not having the proper terminology - it is a spehnopalatine block, using cotton swabs through the nose.

in the interim i have found useful clinical information through a google web search and find it to have relatively few risks. would be interested in hearing if anyone else has had this procedure recently and, if so, with what result.  i have disk herniations at C2-3, C3-4, C4-5, C5-6 and a spur at C5-6 with left arm radiculopathy. am trying to avoid surgery.  i am in buffalo, new york and my orthopedic surgeon is one of a handful of docs undergoing approval for a new procedure he learned in south america using some sort of replacement disk. anyway, if you know of patients of yours who have had this procedure i would be interested in their outcome. thanks again!

I also have disc herniation in the same areas. I had a discectomy two years ago in Buffalo NY by Dr. Moreland on the C5-6 disc. It was a successful surgery with a titanium cage that replaced the disc. I have however been experiencing progressive pain, radiculopathy in both arms, upper back, neck for the last year. I also have numbness and tingling in both arms. I am on hydrocodone for the pain but it does not seem to help much anymore. I would like to know if you have this procedure and if it is successful. I am looking for anything that will take the pain away.
