Absence seizures are a generalized seizure disorder, meaning that the abnormal discharges are coming from all over the brain at once. Staring spells can be do to generalized or focal seizures. Therefore, it is important to have an EEG to confirm whether the EEG is focal or generalized. If it is truely absence epilepsy, then medications such as ethosuximide, valproate, clonazepam, and lamotrigine may be effective. Establishing care with an epilepsy doctor who can help you make medication decisions would be helpful. Good luck.
