26yo with numbness and tingling

by jhall, Sep 07, 2003 12:00AM
Started getting symptoms about four weeks ago.At first I started to notice cramping in my arms at night when I slept.I found it uncomfortable to sleep because when I laid on my arms it was painful. Then I started to notice my middle toe on my left foot feel numb.I noticed that my arms would cramp up all the time.(It wasn't just at night anymore.)I had a difficult time holding my purse because my grip didn't feel too strong.  My hands also cramp up like arthritic pain in joints and tops of hands. My arms, legs and face would feel numb (not completely numb) and would tingle.I feel tingling in different parts of my body.I often describe it to my husband as if I was massaged with "ICY HOT".(very cold) This has been going on and off for the past couple of weeks. In the morning it doesn't seem too bad, but as the day moves on it progressively becomes more evident. I have also noticed that my arms become extremely fatigued quickly.  When I am using the telephone or writing on the board at school I have to rest my arm often because it starts cramping. This does not happen every time that I write or use my arms. My legs also do the same thing. (Very fatigued.)But again this doesn't happen every time that I stand up.At work I have been in several conversations where I forget peoples names or what I was talking about. I was tested for lupus, rh. arthritis, thyroid and vitamin def. all came back negative. I will have mri w/contrast monday. does this sound like anxiety or more like ms?  I was even thinking of lyme disease. grandfather is the only person with neuro problem parkinsons thanks

Your symptoms are not the classic initial manifestations of MS. Yes the symptoms you describe can be seen in MS patients, however most of these individuals have had a firm localized neurologic deficit to establish the diagnosis. Therefore, obtaining the MRI is a reasonable test. Checking Lyme titers is also reasonable.

If by cramping of your muscles you mean involuntary contraction of the muscles and not weakness, then routinue studies such as electrolytes should be checked at some point. If however, your hand is weak then muscle enzymes and other markers of inflammation should be checked. An EMG is a test which measures the function of the muscle and nerve, and may be helpful in your case. If you have not seen a neurologist, I would recommend it.

Good luck

I also have numbness in my legs and arms.  Sometimes to where it feels like I have a charlie horse everywhere.  Really don't know what is going on.  It's been like this for 2 years now and at first I just thought it was from either sitting on my legs and they would just fall asleep, or at night I sleep on my right arm and figured it was just falling asleep.  Until recently, I was moving on the couch and my neck and head started tingling.  I am now starting to get worried about all of this.  When I sit like on a stool or something hard now both of my legs feel like they fall asleep and I have to stand up and stomp my feet and walk it off.  What the heck is going on.

Hi,  Your symptoms sound just like mine.  A couple of weeks

ago my arms and legs started tingling like they were asleep.  It's

worse at night and lasts all day.  My head feels full of pressure and I can't think straight.  The pressure changes as I move my head. I haven't been to work in 3 weeks which is so unlike me, but I can't function.  I feel like I have a low fever or a sinus infection, but all ct scans and brain/neck mri's are normal.

I'm workinig with a neurologist who has done a lot of blood work too and all is normal with various things that could cause these sensations in my body such as ms, lupus, lyme, inflamatory indicators, etc.  Nobody seems to be able to figure this out.

Have any of you who have posted similar comments gotten any useful diagnosises to let you know what's wrong?  I really need help.  I feel like I'm becoming disabled, and I don't want to think that way, but no one has any answers.  If any neurologists who read this have any opinions, I'd appreciate your input.  Thanks, susieque

Your symptoms sound as if I were writing them except that I'm in my 40's. Please let me know what you find out -- my doctor is blaming mine on perimenopause symptoms and I'm upset about this because I've had no tests done. (I'm changing doctors when I can)

The "brain fog" is a particular concern --

Do you have pain in your neck or at the base of your skull too?

Does the tingling in your arms feel like you have bands tight around them? Mine feels odd on the sides closet to my body(underarm areas down).

I sure would like to know what it could be.

Thanks!

Looks like a lot of people with the same types of things going on.  I started with the tingling/numbness feeling in left arm and shoulder about 9 months ago.  Has progressed to pain, hot, cold, in left arm and tingling/numbness in right leg (below knee, mostly bottom of foot
