headaches and seizures

About 6 weeks ago I had surgrey on my left knee, in recovery I start having seizures. My doctor at the time told me I had dystonia caused by an allergic reaction to demeral. 3 weeks after that I took Darvon for pain, and 30 mintues later started having the seizures again. I am completly aware of everything that is going on, and can talk during the seizures. I went to the er and they gave me benadryl and sent me home with a head tick. The next day I start having the seizures again, and my mom took me to the ER, where they gave me benadryl again. When the benadyrl wore off, I startde having the seizures again. My doc then tried Valuim - which made them worse and the gave me Atavin. I continued to have the tremors, but they sent me home. Monday I went to my family doc, and he sent me to a neuro. The neruo told me that I was depressed and that was where my seizures where comming from. My family doc explained to me that I had a rare disorder called conversion disorder. I do not think I have this, but thursday I will get it ruled out. I had an EEG done, and during the strobe light test I had seizures. My neuro told me that the seizures were not comming from my brain and were non-epiltic. Since the start of the seizures 4 weeks ago I have had a very bad headache. Yesterday it finally went to a full blowen migraine, and unfortuantly I have to be at work. My question is are the two linked some how, and is there any disorder that would cause the two.

One association between migraine and epilepsy is that in some children migraine patients have epileptiform discharges (electrical activity which suggests the tendency to have seizures) in the occpital lobe. Often in patients with intermittent neurologic symptoms both migraine and seizures need to be ruled out. Lastly, some patients with epilepsy will have a migraine like headache after their seizures.

Based on the history which you have provided I can not rule in or out the possibility of seizures. Your neurologist has stated you have non-epileptic seizures, which simply means seizures which are not due to electrical activity in the brain. Causes for non-epileptic seizures include cardiac arrythmias or syncope, and psychiatric disorders, such as conversion disorder.

One thing to discuss with your doctor is possibiliy obtaining a MRI or CT of the brain. This will help to rule out structural lesions within the brain. If you want a second opinion, then I would recommend seeing a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy at an academic center. Good luck

I was very interested in hearing your story about experiencing 'seizures' and the neurologist not seeing any brain differences during them.  I'm curious what you have, convulsions, twitching, contracting muscles?  I am not a medical person but have a son who had a concussion and he frequently has muscles freezing-up or contracting problems and he has also gotten the conversion-reaction idea given to him due to lack of physical evidence of damage; also no EEG brain wave differences. From what I've read about conversion reaction, it doesn't seem to fit, though.  No avoidance-behavior or anything wanting to avoid or other similar 'stimulus'.  It seems like a waste-basket diagnosis when they don't know what else to look for.  It is very frustrating to be told things must be just 'in his head'.  [they don't word it that way, they say "the physical symptoms are real, but his subconscious must be causing them..." ]  I don't buy it.  I would be interested in more input on conversion reaction and other instances of brain injuries where they can't pinpoint what's going on so say just psychological.  I'm curious what transpired when you went to 'find out' if converson reaction is indicated....how did they test for that or rule that out?

Had a CT a MIR all fine i hit my head pretty hard half my  head was bruised recently i had 4 seizures been to the ER 5 times since Aug the 21st I have never had seizures and no one in my family has them. I am a long term migraine sufferer.  All through childhood and they became severe at about age 19.  I've tried almost all preventative as well as pain meds.  The past couple of months I've started having seizures and the docs cannot tell me why?  Are migraines and seizures related?  Could I have started having seizures b/c ny migraines are so out of control?  My migraines last usually a week or so before I break down and go get a shot at the ER, which usually takes 6-8 hours.  Does anyone know of anything new I can try for my migraines?  I carry a backpack full of antidepressants, Imitrex and narcotics.
