Clueless and near crazy over condition

by Leish, Dec 14, 2003 12:00AM
My very good friend is plagued by a condition yet to be diagnosed, but has had several tests locally and out of state, MRI'S, CT's, and spinal taps. He has also seen Oral Surgeons and sought help outside neurology. About 2 years ago, he noticed a tingling in his lip, and awoke a few days later to numbness covering the left side of his face. Since, it has spread to the right side, over the forehead, nose, part of the neck, and the left ear, as well as the inside of his mouth. Almost his entire face is numb all the time, it does not come and go.  He takes Tegritol and other anti-seizure meds, has tried several with no change. He coughes a great deal during the day (about every 15 minutes) and is awoken throughout the night by coughing and feelings of choking, and must sleep in a certain position to rest for any length of time. He's lost a great deal of weight b/c he is unable to chew food, often bites his lip, and oddly enough, sometimes pressure, even touching a certain place on his face makes him cough and gives him a sharp, painful sensation. Other symptoms which may or may not be related but have occured w/i the last 2 years are the development of many allergies, frequent headaches, a few small red bumps on the face, like tiny bites, barely noticeable but always there, a slight yellowish color to the skin, numbness in little finger, very dry hair, and upon ejaculation, he has a total lack of semen or fluid.

The condition seems to be getting worse, and I worry that this could spread to vital organs and impair breathing. Any info would be so appreciated, so far no clue.

Based on the symptoms you have provided it appears that this problem is involving more then just the nervous system. There is no specific diagnosis I can provide. Categories which should be investigated include inflammatory conditions, connective tissue disorders, and metabolic conditions. If your friend has not been seen at a large academic center, I would recommend it. Starting with a rheumatologist may be a good start. Good luck
