numb fingers

by bobby149, Dec 25, 2003 12:00AM
my left thumb, first and second fingers became numb about a year ago.I have had the full electrical test battery at the MGH. They diagnose a damage of some sort in the media nerve, maybe 6 inches from the wrist. Carpal Tunnel op is eliminated. They gave me a splint to wear at night and prescribed Celebrex. Three months later- no change in the condition. Does anyone know of any other treatment or surgery ?

You stated that the EMG localized the problem to the median nerve. However, have they investigated for known causes of nerve damage? If the splint has not helped the situation, then I would recommend having a second look at the problem. Perhaps a return appointment with your neurologist. Good luck

Numbness in hands and fingers with cause unknown.  I am affected with stabbing pain and numbness in my both hands and fingers.  It feels liks somebody is sticking toothpicks under my nails or they are just numb.  When I wake up in the morning both hands and arms are numb up to the elbows.  I have had an EMG to right arm and to left leg, but they were all normal. The symptoms started in summer of 2001 first with the left foot.  It has progressed to involve all four extremities but the right foot is only affected periodically with stabbing pains.  The arch of my left foot is higher than my right one and it is very tender.  It feels like somebody is sticking a sharp object right through the sole and top of my foot.  I have balance problems, and stuttering.  All diagnostic testing to date has been normal so I am undiagnosed, but far from normal as far as symptoms go.  It all started around age 55 and I don't have any organic diseases to account for these symptoms.  I also am super sensitive to any bright lights, sudden movements or noises.  I react very strongly usually by screaming and my heart just about jumps out of my chest.  They suspect I may have an upper motor neuron problem but the MRI in 2002 was clean.  I have a younger brother with foot problems as well and they suspected he may have Charcot Marie Tooth but the tests were not conclusive.  He wears an AFO splint on his foot.

I WAS JUST BROWSING THE FORUMS TRYING TO PLACE A QUESTION REGARDING MY SON'S TOURETTE SYNDROME BUT THE FORUM HAS ALREADY FILLED IT'S CAPACITY.  ANYHOW HAVE EITHER OF YOU WITH THESE SYMPTOMS TRIED ANYTHING AS SIMPLE AS A CHIROPRACTOR TO RELEASE PRESSURE OFF YOUR NERVEOUS SYSTEM.  THE SYMPTOMS WON'T DISAPEAR OVER NIGHT BUT IF YOU FIND THE RIGHT CHIROPRACTOR IT'S VERY POSSIBLE THAT THE SYMPTOMS WILL GO......JUST A SUGGESTION...

I had surgery a few weeks ago. The IV in my wrist left my fingers numb and hand and arm in excruciating pain. The pain has subsided other than some now and again and the fingers are not numb - but the soreness is there and the feeling is not the same in the hand. I am splinting it and that helps but although it has improved - it is definetly NOT the hand I went into surgery with. (My surgery was not hand related) I had surgery for carpal tunnel a few yrs ago and never had a problem since.

The hand spec. said give it time - but I don't see it improving beyond what it is.  Any advice, ideas?? What to do next? pls email me at whitekar54 @ yahoo.com..THANKS
