perineurocytoma of third cranial nerve.

Hi. I am 27 year old female who is five and half weeks post op from having a grape sized perineurocytoma removed from my third cranial nerve at the cavernous sinus and carotid artery area.  I was told that this was very rare but I can not find any information on this type of tumor anywhere.  I am certain that this is what they diagnosed the tumor as because I have spoke to his nurse a couple of times. I just found out the pathology two and half weeks ago.  I have requested for my NS to get me some literature on this but he is out of town till sometime next week.  I would appreciate any information, history,or case history that you know of or could find. The tumor was causing third nerve palsy with left eye dilation.  We are hoping that the nerve will heal and regenerate because fibers of the nerve had to be removed with the tumor.  This what I have been told.  My left eye also now will not open on it's own I am however still a little swollen.  I do see some improvement on eye and muscle movement around the eye daily.  That's good.  Anyways I am desperate for some knowledge on this type of tumor.  Thanks. kg

I could not find a reference to this type of tumor. I was not sure if this was an old term so I asked our pathologist, and he also was not aware of what tumor they were referring to. What I would recommend is that you ask your doctor for a copy of the actual pathology report. Good luck.

Thanks for trying.  I do however believe this has another name perineurioma.  I still cannot find an example of one of these on a cranial nerve.  I believe this is also called an localized hypertrophic neuropathy.  I am not sure but I believe these are other correct terms. If you know anything about these that would be great.  Thanks again.  Kim
