What could this be? Bibromyalgia, chronic Myofascial Pain?

by Dimitria, Mar 18, 2004 12:00AM
Symptoms started 2 yrs ago in both legs, they felt very dead & numb, below my knees to my foot.  Lasted for a few days. came back again in my right leg only but not as severe but lasted 6 wks.  & went away then came back again. But this time never went away. At night my leg aches & I can not sleep on that side now. Also it started to go to my right arm but the sensations was not the exactly the same. Mostly in my arm it just hurt, felt like my muscles were very sore. This was on & off for about 1 yr.  then got worse, went into my hand, now the wrist, the palm of my hand.  I can't sit on a sofa without my arm going numb. Can not sleep on my back either.  I have seen a neurologist. He took several MRI's of my back, neck,  blood test, all came back normal. I am still breast feeding so can't take dye MRI. I'm on neurontin, it does help with my leg but not my arm. I had a test taken for Carpool tunnel but the results were mild, too mild for what was going on with me. My arms & hands get so bad, seems like I can not get a good grip of things anymore. doing stuff with them make it hurt.  It has now spread to my left arm & hand, the pain is bad.   My arms and leg are  cold. It is getting so hard to sleep at night. I also have a Thyroid condition. I am taking 50 mlg of synthroid.  I really hope that you can help me, I am at such a loss her.  At least maybe you have a suggestion how to make sleeping more comfortable. Using a computer seems to kill my muscles in my arm and legements in my hands.  Do you have any idea what this could be?

The MRI of the spine, even without contrast, has helped to exclude most structural problems, vascular problems, and old inflammation. Was a MRI of your brian performed? This may be of some value to exclude problems within the brain. Otherwise an evaluation for a systemic inflammatory condition or connective tissue disorder would be reasonable. It may be reasonable to obtain a second opinion at an academic center. Good luck.

How old are you? Have you ever had Pins and Needles?  I had these kind of syptoms after my first baby and I kept blaming the epidural.  Mine were not severe and they went after 4 months.  I now have much worse symtoms and keep trying to post my question but the forum is always full. I too am desperate, so good luck and I will read the comments to you.

I'm 34 and had my baby over 4 years ago.  But, yes I have had that.  It started out as that and got so much worse.  I would be so happy if they every go away.  Glad yours did.

Thanks for your reply.  Are you still breast-feeding the 4 yr old? That's very brave of you. Make sure you drink lots of milk to keep your calcium up and also vits.  But back to your health, I have read on this forum that some people find magnesium just as good as neurontin, have you tried this?  Do you exercise?

Unfortunately as I told you above all my symptoms are back but much much worse and I am at my wits end, although I have different symptoms to you.  How did you manage to post a question on the forum? Every time I try, it is full and I am desperate for someone to read my story and help.

Hi I started having problems after my baby was born too. I started having tingling, numbness, twitching, & cramping in extremities. My symptoms are worse w/ menstrual cycle and stress, they vary also. I`m still having these problems, and am 1 1/2 yrs post partum. I had my daughter vaginally w/ an epidural. I`ve seen several neurologists and have no diagnosis. All testing has been normal so far. Email: ***@**** Thanks...

I have the same as you all but mine is a lot better now.  Check out www.mwibewell.com and www.gardenoflifeusa.com.  Maybe some info on there will help you also.  It has taken a whole lifestyle change but it is worth it to feel better.  I am 38 and mine started after the birth of my third child.  I understand what you are going through.  God bless

Opps LOL you caught me :-)  Yep, unfortunately I am still breast feeding.  He's almost 4, but he has speech problems and is behind 2 years. :-(  Luckily he only nurses at night to get to sleep (Bad habit).  Hmm, maybe I'll try magnesium too.  neurontin help my leg but not my arms.  They feel like too totally different problems.

I'm really sorry that your symptoms are back.  sounded a lot like what mind did.  Mine are getting better but, I know that they be back again.  It seems the cycle.  My Doc thinks it Chronic Myofascial Pain but he really hasn't given me a diagnosis.  Just sent me to the PT to get therapy which I don't know if it is really working.  So, doesn't a DR. answer our questions?  BTW, try posting in the morning.
