Shunt Overdrainage/Subdural Hematoma

by Chelby, Mar 21, 2004 12:00AM
Hello.  My father had a Codman Hakim Programmable VP shunt implanted in December for Adult Hydrocephalus. He began to experience vision problems and by the end of January the shunt had to be removed due to subdural hematoma caused by overdrainage of fluid. Fortunately, the blood clot is dissipating on its own and most likely will not require surgical removal. In the meantime his Hydrocephalus symptoms (gait disturbance, balance problems, etc.) have returned. I was wondering what are his future options for treatment of Hydrocephalus after the blood clot has completely dissipated?

Thank you so much.

Another shunt can be placed, and the pressure setting can be adjusted lower to drain less fluid. If the pressure is set lower hopefully the sub-dural complication can be avoided. Good luck
