Weakness and Unrefreshed Sleep

by mf30127, May 11, 2004 12:00AM
In early Fall 2003, I experienced general fatigue, sore throat over approximately seven weeks. Several others reported similar symptoms.  Drs. inclined to assign cause to stress/anxiety associated with living circumstances, which involved severe psychological stress.  Feelings of fatigue returned in late February (?) and have continued off and on since.  In Early April, noticed a sensation of pervading warmth flooding left foot approximately half dozen times a day.  On 4/23, I had a sleep test to reevaluate diagnosed sleep apnea.  The result was very mild apnea (15 short episodes over 8 hours) with a recommendation to discontinue CPAP.  Prescribed Provigil 100 mg for one week; 200 mg thereafter, a.m.  Prescribed Gabitril 2 mg for 10 days; 4 mg thereafter, p.m.  Sleep seemed a bit more refreshing, but still felt generally tired and slightly lightheaded.  Spoke with Dr. on 5/7 and, at his direction, returned to CPAP and discontinued prescriptions. Since that time, have become more conscious of the following:  Despite three days (5/9-11) of apparently solid sleep (8 hours/night), awoke unrefreshed.  Have general sense of muscle weakness, tired eyes, lack of energy, whole body sensation of trembling ‘below the surface’, sensation similar to the weakness experienced during recovery from ‘foot falling asleep’ most clearly perceived in lower right leg.  Am wondering what might be the causes of these recent experiences, which are frightening and make working a struggle.

The symptoms you are describing could be consistent with an underlying inflammatory condition or possibly a connective tissue disorder. However, when transitioning onto CPAP, it may take some time before you feel refreshing sleep. If you continue to experience these symptoms I would recommend having it evaluated further. Stress and depression can also cause some of these symptoms as well, and if the stressors you have mentioned have not resolved, this should also be considered. Good luck.
