strange chills

I have a variety of symptoms, but one in particular I can't get information about. The feeling I get is similar to getting a cold chill, except it is in just one area at a time. Like a patch on my arm,leg,head,face, never at the same time. Sometimes when I look there will be a stream of goosebumps maybe about 10-20 in the area I am feeling the "chill sensation". I would really like to know what could cause this symptom. Has anyone ever experienced this, heard of this? Thank you for your time.

This sensation would be classified as a paresthesia, which is an adbnormal sensation. The diffuse and intermittent nature of the symptoms means a more systemic disorder should be cosidered. There is no specific disorder which this suggests. Disorders which should be excluded include inflammatory conditions, connective tissue disorders, B12 deficiency, and thyroid dysfunction. A neurologist should be able to evaluate this problem for you with some blood work, and perhaps a EMG (MUSLCE/NERVE TEST). Good luck.

Last year, I experienced those chill symptoms on my scalp and on my legs, mostly the thigh area. I would get a line or patch of goosebumps, along with the sensation of a chill, if you could call it that. It was very wierd. At that time, I was also experiencing other neurological sypmtoms. I did have an MRI that showed an area on my thoracic spine, described as non-specific. MRI also showed a small nodule in my thalamus. After a year, another MRI was done, and the abnormality on my spine was gone, along with most of my symptoms. They slowly went away. Still don't have an answer for what went on, and still have some odd sensations every now and then. I have just learned to ignore them! Well, I try my best, anyway...

So glad you asked this question. I've had a wide variety of symptoms that come and go from burning to tingling to fasciculations to dizziness, etc for 4 years. I too have these occasional spells of chills/goosebumps that seem to run along nerve branches in my legs. No one, including a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, has classified what it is. Nice to see that it's just another part of parethesias.

FYI - I'm 33, female & all tests (blood, emg, nerve conduction, etc) have been normal. I've been told everything from it's anxiety to possible B12 def. to hyperthyroidism to simply a neurological syndrome that may never be diagnosed. Nothing has ever really tested out...which is good, but still keeps me searching for answers and relief. Best of luck.

I AM A 36 YEAR OLD FEMALE WHO HAS HAS THIS CHILL SENSATION ALONG THE PERONEAL NERVE DISTRIBUTION OF RIGHT CALF. IT FEELS JUST LIKE A CHILL, BUT IT ISN'T A COLD ONE, JUST THE SENSATION. HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR ABOUT 7 MONTHS NOW AND BEGAN AFTER PUSHING MYSELF PAST NORMAL WHILE EXERCISING. COMES & GOES.

Thank you for your comment, I am 30, all my blood tests are normal, my EMG was normal. My doctor says on paper I am perfectly healthy. I am having the same symptoms as you plus a few more. He didn't know what to think of the "chill/goosebumps" but thinks it is depression and anxiety. I decided to go along and begin Effexor, to see if it helps. I think that if I feel better yet still have physical symptoms then maybe further tests will be run. I also had a normal MRI of brain. (doctor said early on there was a small chance of MS but didn't go further than MRI) I just hope he is right and what I went though will never happen again because of the medication. I have been on it for 4 days. Good luck to you!

FIND A WELL QUALIFIED CHIROPRACTOR. get x-rays and have regular spinal manipulation this will give you much relief. most of these chills are related to spine (nerve flow, blood flow, spinal fluid needs to flow freely to the brain).
