Post Polio

Recently I have been experiencing a great amount of weakness and fatigue mostly in my right side and chest area, also it seams to be more laborious to breath and I seam to ache all over as if I had the flue.  I am 56 and most of my life I have been in pretty good health, but at the age of three I had what my parents told me was a mild case of polio.

I have asked my family Dr. if this could be because of a Thyroid problem I have but he states the medication (synthroid 50MCG) is keeping my thyroid level normal.  My question is it possible that these symptoms could be related to my case of polio back in 1950?

Post polio syndrome involves the progression of weakness which may occur after ten years of stability from the initial polio infection. It typically involves the muscles affected by the polio, but also can affect muscles which were previously thought not to be affected. However, this is a diagnosis of exclusion, and other disorders should be ruled out. I would recommend seeing a neurologist, who can perform a neurologic examination and then recommend testing. Other muscle diseases, electrolyte disorders, nerve disorders, and spinal problems may have to be excluded. The testing may involve a EMG (muscle nerve test). Good luck
