Could it be MS or seizures

by mes, Jun 03, 2004 12:00AM
I am a 39 year old woman 116 lbs who is in very good shape, but in I have been having episodes where my left side becomes very warm along with a weak numb and tingling sensation and light headedness sometime a little nausea almost daily and sometimes several times a day for the past 8 weeks. I have had a MRI done on the cervical spine because of some neck problems, the only thing that showed up in that was a small spur between my # 5 &6 cervical disc this was in November 03. I have been going to a chiropractor since Jan and now my neck has been fine. But as I have said now I have these problems on my left side. I have gone to a neurologist and he had a MRI done on the brain which was normal. Before this he and my Primary Dr. said this was symptoms of ms. But since the brain MRI came back normal, he is now sending me in for and EEG to check for seizures and has ruled out ms. The numbness and tingling at first only came on when I have had these symptoms but now it is occuring all the time. I feel fatigued all the time because of these episodes and I cannot work out as hard as I have been doing. I have also in the last began experiencing pain in my left eye. All these seem to be symptoms of ms and not of seizures from the research I have been doing. I had blood work done that checked my red & white blood cells, cholesterol, iron, b12, folic, and cbc it was all normal so they ruled out my heart. Do you think that this may be seizures and why? & is my dr. correct in ruling out MS? If my eeg comes back normal, what should I have done next? I would appreciate your help.

If the symptoms are intermittent and lasting minutes at a time, then seizures may be possible. If the symptoms are longer, it is unlikely, but not impossible to be seizures. I would ask your doctor if the MRI's were done with contrast. Occasionally extra findings can be seen with contrast. Also, blood work for inflmmatory disease, connective tissue disorders, and B12 deficiency should be evaluated. If the symptoms have changed dramatically since your last spine MRI, it may be reasonable to repeat this. If all of this is negative, then an evoked potential of the median nerve and tibial nerve may be helpful. This is a test which measures how well a signal travels from your arm or leg to your brain, and tests the intergrity of the pathway. If this is negative a spinal tap may be performed. If the testing is negative a second opinion with another neurologist may be useful. Good luck

My symptoms have been on the left side also and very similar to yours.  They come and go and right now I feel pretty good (thank God).  I truly believe that I am suffering these problems because I have not eaten healthy, I drank pop for years, and had silver fillings in my teeth.  I'm sure there are other factors but those are some of the main ones.  I have seriously cleaned up my diet and quit the pop.  My improvement has not been quick.  REad the Maker's Diet by Jordan Rubin.  It has much info in it and the www.mercola.com website has been very helpful.  Best wishes for you.  Hang in there.  I beleive that you will improve with changes.
