Vertigo Nausea and Muscle fasciculations

by sunfėll, Jun 06, 2004 12:00AM
In 1999 I started getting muscle twitches all over my body. I went to a neurologist and my blood tests and EEG were normal. I was diagnosed with Benign Idiopathic Myoclonus, which I believe is called Benign Fasciculation Syndrome now. So I didn't concern myself with it for the next few years and I did not take any medications. Recently I started getting less muscle twitches but I am getting intermittent jerks of the legs, arms, hands and fingers along with muscle twitches. Last week I had a bout of vertigo, room spinnning, along with extreme nausea for 24 hours. Since then I've had residual nausea and dizziness that gets worse at times and it feels like I can slip into vertigo at any minute. I have not seen a doctor. Should I be concerned? I have not taken any medications or drugs.

I think you should seek the care of a physician. I would recommend starting with your primary care doctor, who then can make the appropriate referrals if needed. The balance problem could  be due to a problem in the ear or the brain, and this may need to be investigated. Regarding the muscle twitching, this may be related to or seperate from the dizzy issue. Good luck.

I forgot to mention my stats. I am a 23 year old caucasian female.

I am a 57 female with similar symptoms, ie. dizziness, rippling of muscles, numbness and feet and hands are either cold and numb or hot and burning.  I also have a hypersensitive nervous system and I can's walk straight.  Two MRI's, EMG's and an EEG have all been normal.

I just saw a neuro in Toronto for a second opinion.  He can't understand my symptoms either as the Evoked Sensory Potential and EMG test that he understook were normal.  He did send me for a Lyme test just to rule that one out.

I mentioned that all my problems seemed to happen after I had a viral infection and a rash around my waist that moved upwards to my chest, (2 1/2 years ago) He confirmed that viruses can indeed cause neurological symptoms but they don't understand why.

That is an interesting concept for other people with unexplained neurologocal symptoms.

Yes before I got the muscle twitches I had a rash on my abdomen and chest with itchy raised bumps, as well. I figured it was due to detergent, but perhaps it was something else? I have not gotten the rash recently, and I have gotten rid of a lot of other health complaints by changing my diet. I have a very healthy, organic, optimally nutritious diet, and it has not helped the twitching. I'm not even sure if it is a neurological problem as my EEG was normal, and people with benign fasciculation syndrome usually have normal EKG's as well as normal MRI's. I did not have this done or an MRI or anything. I agree with your other recent post. I have had a lot of nightmares since this started, and I am not interested in a doctor telling me that my symptoms are because of stress or anxiety or any other similar thing. I am college educated, and I do not believe in psychiatry.

I am also a college student, I have the same symptoms, with a little more, but I am being diagnosed soon, hopefully(damn workerd comp insurance) with RSD/ CRPS and I was told it was in my head for over 2 years, and within the past 2 years They have found links to some other things, anyways what I am trying to say is, don't believe all that "in your head" stress ****, cause it blew up in my doc.s face when a neurologist actually found something wrong. You might want to see someone, just because better safe then sorry. If anything College has relieved a lot of the "Life" stress by helping me feel as though I am accomplishing things. I don't know if this all makes sense.(I am on mass meds) But I hope it helps.

It may just help to look up CRPS just to see if anything fits. The symptoms and such, cause undiagnosed it can get out of control and disabling really fast, I have had since I was 18 and now at 21 I have almost no use of my right hand, shoulder, arm, and am losing function of the face. Things change fast. So I hope this helps, again, Just look it up.
