upperleft arm pain

by lindae, Jun 17, 2004 12:00AM
In the past three weeks I have experienced very sharp pains located right above the elbow in my left arm. These pains last for about 10 seconds but I feel a little lightheaded afterwards. I am female,49 years old and a smoker(I know better).I have never had any blood pressure or heart problems but had a cervical disc fusion in 1998. I am getting concerned about these sharp pains.

The sharp pains need to be evaluated. If this is associated with a heaviness in the chest, difficulty breathing, sweating, nausea, or chest pain then I think cardiac disease should be excluded. If this is a neurologic problem it may be a problem in your spine or in one of the nerves of the arm. A neurologist can evaluate you and help determine which is likely. Then the appropriate testing can be performed. Good luck.
