Tingly Thigh

Hi, I am a 49-year old doctor in Malaysia with numbness and some tingling of the right lateral femoral nerve cutaneous region, ie the anterolateral of thigh for about 2 weeks. It is almost normal in the morning (after a night’s sleep) and it sets in by 2 pm. It bothers me when my trousers rubbed on the thigh but I can sleep well.  I am otherwise healthy, no weakness, no pain, no fever, no lumps. My  hematology (TWC, ESR 1 only)  and routine biochemistry are normal.  I have no family history of neurological diseases.  The orthopaedic surgeon here  thought it was related to my wearing my heavy camera on my belt. Somehow the belt may have caused edema to the nerve.  I had stopped wearing the camera for a week and the numbness is still there. The neurologist thought it is meralgia paraesthetica.  I will really appreciate some advice: would ultrasound  or MRI show up anything?  I have a few sores on the toes of the same side, the dermatologist thought it was eczema of some sort.  I wonder if this may be the source of infection in the inguinal nodes or the  nerve itself.  I took ciprofloxacin 500 mg bd for a week and there seems to be slight improvement after a few days. Would a short course of steroid (say Prednisolone 10 mg tds for a week with Omeprazole  20 mg daily ) help?  Thank you.

Without examing you I can not be sure what this is. Disorders such as meralgia paresthetica and local trauma from a camera bag are reasonable thoughts. If there is any weakness associated with this a more extensive evaluation needs to be performed. A EMG (muscle/nerve test) can be performed to assess the lateral femoral nerve and assure that your other nerves are normal. An imaging study of the lower abdomen and pelivs may be reasonable to exclude mass lesions. Good luck

Just a thought. My sister has MS.  One of the things she noticed at the onset of the illness was tingling in her upper thigh which later turned numb.  I understand there is  medication that a person can take with early diagnosis.  I know this because my step sister has been diagnosised with MS also and she is taking the medicine. Just trying to help.  Sincerely, Tycoon
