What is the underlying cause/condition of my pain?

by Helena77, Jun 29, 2004 12:00AM
I was healthy up until last year in May 03 at 25 when I got a stress fracture in my heel after increasing exercise to a moderate level. A month after this the ball of my other foot began hurting and the pain escalated until both of my feet were hurting in the toes and balls of the feet. I went to see a rheummatologist, and although there was no elevated sedimination or rheumatoid factor I was diagnosed with seronegative arthritis and put on 20 mg of methotrexate and various nsaids, the last being 100 mg of Indocin (This was in Feb.). At the beginning of April my feet were feeling better and I started walking long distances, but then my legs began hurting, I began feeling off-balance and both my arms/legs felt weak. I also began experiencing visible twitches throughout my body but mainly in my legs and arms. I stopped taking the methotrexate in mid-April thinking this could be causing sideefects but nothing got better. My rheummatologist confessed that he believes he misdiagnosed me and sent me to a neurologist about 2-4 weeks after the onset of symptoms. Evoked potential tests came out normal. An MRI of my brain showed one white spot that both the neurologist and an MS specialist said was not indicative of MS and an MRI of my lumbar spine was normal.

Other symptoms have included dizziness and headaches, but my main complaint is my leg pain, which now seems to start at the heel and affect the rest of the leg.

I am wondering if all of my symptoms (the stress fracture, foot and leg pain) are part of one condition or if the leg pain and twitches are something else.

I cannot place one specific diagnosis to explain all of the symptoms. Re-checking the inflammatory markers would be reasonable to do. Also, a EMG (muscle nerve test) may be indicated if your neurologic examination is abnormal. Otherwise having a second opinion with an academic neurologist would be my best advice. Without examining you and taking your history, I can not provide much more help. Sorry for the delay, good luck.

I forgot to add that tests for peripheral neuropathy came out normal as well, but there were no tests done for small fiber neuropathy.
