completely confused

completely confused

I have a five year old daughter who has had something not quite right about her since birth. My family brushed me off as overprotective, but at age three we discovered her vision was 20/400 (correctable with glasses). I thought that would solve things but it didn't. She continues to have trouble understanding what is said to her, especially by men. She "spaces out" often when we can't get her attention. That seems to be getting worse. She is very emotional--cries often at least once a day she has a meltdown. She also is very hyper at night no matter how tired. She sometimes has emotional fits at mealtime. I finally have decided with my husband's support that something is really wrong, and since we have taken her to the doctor. Hearing test normal, CT normal, dx with moderate speech delay at age 3, eeg "essentially normal with drowsiness?" from the doctor. We are headed to see a pediatric neurologist next week. The family doctor thinks it is petit mal seizures, but they were not on the EEG. She has knocked a tooth out from a fall, and wrecked a bicycle(doesn't remember the wreck). My question is would the seizures explain the other stuff? And Could it be related to her diet or blood sugar in some way? And what if they cannot determine it is seizures based on an EEG? What would be the next step? I am keeping a journal of events I notice. What questions do I need to ask the neurologist next week? Thank you so much.

Her overall condition could be due to seizures, if she is having frequent seizures. Or the cause of the possible seizures could also be causing the other symptoms. I would agree with the consult with a pediatric neurologist. They will be able to determine what tests are necessary next. They may include a more prolonged EEG, a MRI of the brain, and lab tests. Her diet most likely has nothing to due with her condition. Keeping a record of things you have noted will be helpful, and write your concerns down on paper before you see the doctor. This way you will not forget to state your concerns. The questions you will need to ask will depend on what they find. Good luck.

I forgot to mention that she also has slurred speech on bad days. I don't know if the doctor will see this or not, but thought I would add it anyway. Thanks
