MRI and my symptoms

by skymagnolia, Jul 21, 2004 12:00AM
My symptoms: migraines, pain in knees, shoulder, wrists, shakyness, numbness occ. in hand, floating spots, pain in eye, fatigue, low tolerance for noise.

MRI: THere is a septated cystic structure in the r-cerebellar hemi. immediately adjacent to the 4th ventricle and w/ some sligh mass effect.  Couple of images appears to be communication w/ 4th ventricle.  on other a thin septation between cystic lesion and 4th ventricle.  No discrete enhancing mural nodularity is identified.  This lesion w/adjacent smaller one meas. 17x10 mm and w/ a couple adjacent smaller septated structures that meas. 2-3mm.  Again no enhancing lesions identified with this cystic structure suggesting this may represent encephalomalacia possibly from an in utero event.  But the possibility of cystic neoplasm such as a cystic hemangioblastoma is not excluded with certainty.  There is slightly asymmetric T2 signal adjacent to the frontal horn of the r-lateral ventricle.  This is quite small and may represent either volume averagin or some minimal nonspecific perventricular white matter change.  No other lesions and again no enhancing lesions.

Diagnosis: Nonspecific cystic structure in the r-cerebellum abutting and questionably communication with the 4th vetnricle.  This measures 17x10 mm.  This lesions is inderterminate.

Saw a neuro he said that these lesions have nothing to do with my headache and should cause no problems.  All my blood work was fine.  No one can tell me what this MRI means.  What does it mean?  And are there anythings this could be?  All

Unfortunately without seeing the films I can not be specific. Based on the description there is a fluid filled space in the cerebellum, near a structure called the 4th ventricle (ventricles are normal fluid filled spaces in the brain). The doctor describing the findings states it could be due to damage when you were still within your mother's womb, or at the other end of the spectrum could be a tumor. However there is no mass or enhancement to suggest that it is a tumor.  Without seeing the films, I cannot be more specific. If you are still concerned, perhaps a second opinion with an academic neurologist would be reasonable. Good luck.
