postlaminectomy cervical problem

by merri, Nov 29, 2004 12:00AM
Thank you for this service, you give hope to a lot of people. I had anterior fusion of C4 through C7 with a plate for 2 ruptured discs and right radiculopathy in April of 2003. It failed to relieve my radiculopathy.  In October 2003 I had a posterior wide laminectomy of the same levels with fusion, instrumentation and bilateral foramenectomy.  My pain is worse than ever. No relief of radiculopathy, which is now bilateral. I have no deep tendon reflexes in the right arm at any level, and 1+ on the left side. Upper back, shoulder, and neck muscles are in chronic spasm. Weakness in the shoulders and arms continue to progress. I have difficulty holding up my head, it feels like it has fallen forward. I take 80 mg of baclofen per day, Meyers cocktails twice a week and 800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times per day. I am unable to do much of anything without extreme pain and fatigue in my neck and shoulders.  What are my options?  Is there anything else I can do to help myself heal from this?

Your case is very complex, and without reviewing your examination and imaging I cannot make specific recommendations. I would encourage you to have an evaluation at an academic spine center (such as the one at the Cleveland Clinic) for a second opinion. They can review all the information, and make the appropriate medical or surgical recommendations. Good luck.
