Unfortunately in many patients with peripheral neuropathy a cause cannot be identified. I wish I could be of more help and I understand your frustration. Maintaining normal blood sugars is important to help prevent further damage. If you have not been evaluated at a large academic center it would be reasonable. Based on his history, examination, and test results other possibilities may be discovered, and based on the medications he has tried (including maximum dose and duration of treatment) other medications can be recommended. Good luck

I am sorry to keep sying this, but without having met your son I cannot put these results into context. The results report some degenerative changes most notably at the space between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. Based on your reports from earlier it seems your son has more then a problem in the L4 or L5 nerve roots. Good luck.

dear OLDDAD,

where are you at, geographically, that you are out of neurologists?

I suggest seeing a pain specialist for your son.  After 5 neurologists, a more clear diagnosis should have been done:  peripheral neuropathy is a very general term.

If a needle EMG test was performed (was it?), an MRI done (granted, his does not look like a normal MRI) and Neurontin tried -- your son's pain should've been explained.  Ultimately, however, peripheral neuropathy is difficult to treat.   If needed, however, there are plenty of other medications out there that can be tried.  Psychological help is also quite effective especially for a child his age.

How long has your son been suffering with this?

I have to say that there was one item in the MRI that looked somewhat concerning.   I suggest that a pediatrician should take a look at your son and the MRI, paying specific attention to the fact that there was some "loss of signal in the bones" .  There are certain disorders that can mimic peripheral neuropathy but until you address them, the pain will not subside.

Good luck!

I'M SORRY,ISAID MY SON. HE IS BUT HE IS 46 YEARS OLD. YES HE HAS HAD 3 MRI,3 NERVE CONDUCTIVE DEALS WITH THE NEEDLES ,AND AN EMG. OF COURSE EVERYONE THAT HAS BEEN TO MEDICAL SCHOOL CAN HAVE AN OPINION AS TO WHAT IS WRONG,AND A APPRECIATE THAT. MY SON HAS A VERY RESTICTIVE INSURANCE AND THAT HOLDS HIM WITHIN A CERTAIN AREA. MY FATHERLA FEELING IS,HE NEEDS SOME OF THIS NEW LASER WORK ON HIS SPINE BUT THAT IS PROBABLY PRETTY DUMB. I WISH THE DOCS WOULD LOOK INTO THE B12,FOLATE AND THE OXYGEN SUPPLY IN HIS SYSTEM AND ESPECIALY TO HIS FEET AND LASTLY DO AN HbA1C WHICH THEY REFUSE TO DO.HE IS NOT DIABETIC BUT OLDDAD HAS BEEN FOR 55YEARS.SIGNINGOFF..OLDDAD

I am suffering a painful sensation on the bottom of my feet that was diagnosed as perif nueropathy.  Doctors that saw me came up with the same diagnosis and all recommended anti-epileptic drugs like Nuerontin and Toporol. I could not function as a person. I am 51 years old and was desperate for pain relief. I researched the web abd noticed that Stanford and the Mayo Clinic had studied Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) as a treatment for the pain.  Germany has used ALA for this purpose since 1959.  I was skeptic and attempted to resolve a question of its effectiveness.  There is a Doctor in Las Cruces New Mexico (Burt Berkston)that administers ALA intraveniously.  I went to see him and after 10 treatments, I am pain free! The feeling in my feet is returning. I can function without medication.  Maybe ALA is an answer to your sons problem.  It was for me.  I cannot understand; why doctors cannot think outside of the boc.

I have the same problem, and what works for one person might not work for another person, but ask his neurologist about Avinza. I was in the ER every other day with pain, eventually almost took my life because of the agony, then they gave me these magic little pills that took ALL of the pain away. This is just my story, not sure if it will help him, but believe me, it's worth asking about. I know the foot pain all too well! To the point that a featherlight touch feels like a serrated knife!

I also have had severe pain in the soles of my feet since June 2004. The best way I can describe my pain is that I've walked on gravel for miles and miles, like they are severely bruised. It hurts to wear shoes and at times I have even worn slippers into the store. I have had just about every test imaginable done. I also have severe lower back pain. My MRI shows 3 herniated discs and I am going to have a discogram this Friday to determine if they feel surgery is an option. Does your son have low back pain also? I am currently on Neurontin,Tegretol and Vicodin with only very little relief. The neurosurgeons do not feel my feet pain is related to my back pain but it started at the same time.
