fasiculations and other odd symptoms

by snighdog, Jan 31, 2005 12:00AM
Hi, In May 2004 I have parathyroid surgery for high calcium.  Since surgery I started having tingling in my hands and feet and it spread throughout my body.  I had shocking sensations while laying down from my spine.  I had tingling on the right side of my face and I think some dizziness.  That has all gone and now I have fasciculation all over my body.  I have a pulsing fasciculation in my left ankle now.  I have had an MRI of both the brain and the spine with and without contrast and nothing showed up.  I had an emg of my right side and again nothing showed up.  With over work especially of my left arm my left hand will shake for a while.  I am very worried that this could be als.  Does als start with tingling all over the body?  Could the benign fasiculations be all over the body?  The fasciculations seem to get worse with exercise when my muscles are at rest. I am 40 years old and had three dizzy spells that lasted for a couple of minutes and then jaw pain two years ago.  Is this possibly MS?  Please help as I am beginning not to function and take care of my family.  Thank you.

ALS does not start with tingling - in fact, the sensory nerves are generally not affected in this disorder - it is a disorder predominantly of the motor system

Arm shaking after exercise also does not sound like ALS

fasciculations in the absence of constant muscle weakness or muscle wasting is not ALS. Fasciculations can also be caused by exercise, cold, some medications, a benign syndrome with or without cramps and pinched nerves, or other disorders of the anterior spinal cord (ie viral infections like Polio). (You do not have Polio, by the way)

Dizzyness and Jaw pain does not sound neurological in origin

Parathyroid surgery can result in low calciums, which can cause generalized tingling, even something called 'hungry bone syndrome' where the body, used to large levels of parathyoid hormone, reacts to a relative deficit of the hormone by putting calcium back into the bones leaving the serum calcium low

You should have this checked out

Good Luck
