Tortuous Colon

by hewie, Feb 11, 2005 12:00AM
Hi, I’m female-50 – constipation problems 2 yrs, severe now.  No BM at all w/o a laxative of some sort (increasing dosages tho only use 2x wk). Lots high fiber, prune juice, water, prescription stool softeners, etc, NOTHING works. Can’t drink the Miralax doc gave-comes back up. Enemas only break up the hard BM, laxative is needed to do the rest. (motility problem?)  Lot of nausea, bloating, belching, gas, early satiation, pain & often have clear (somex orange) oily stuff in toilet  I’m losing weight (163 to 135 in 5 mos, Ht 5’6 ˝”) but despite the nausea my caloric intake is still high & I still try to eat well. Just had a colonoscopy/endoscopy, ok except for an elongated very tortuous colon/GERD.  Had rectosele repair 12/03 & need one again (I feel due to pressure of built up BM & obgyn said poor vaginal tissue quality – I don’t want to keep going thru this surgery!)  I have, Fibromyalgia & possible Sjogren’s.  I’m  scheduled for autonomic dysfunction testing.  Is partial colectomy ever indicated in cases like this?  possibly help? & what do you think about colon hydrotherapy? I am often just plain ole miserable & my quality of life has really suffered.  Thank you very much

Colonic dilatation can occur in the babies due to lack of development of the small autonomic nerves in the large bowel (called Hirschsprung's Disease)

It would be very rare for this to present this late. Barium radiographs might alert a radiologist to this diagnosis. A rectal biopsy can show whether the nerves are present or not.

Otherwise, autonomic testing without other clinical autonomic abnormalities is likely not to yield anything, and your problem may be one of non-neurological origin.

Good luck

you could also have segmental hirschprungs where certain sections may not have innervation
