Neurological symptoms (paraesthesia), 'normal' MRI with UBOs and root canal

by cynom, Mar 18, 2005 12:00AM
Hello

In Dec. i had an occipital headache upon bending down or bowel movement. I also had pain in my right temple (sensitive to touch), so I went to a neurologist. Both thoracic and brain MRI were  "normal". During a follow up visit, the neurologist mentioned 2 "unidentified bright objects" on the brain MRI,  not consistent with MS in his opinion. My neuro exam was normal.  In Jan. i had an episode of intense burning in my left arm. Also a tingling sensation in my left leg. The arm resolved after 24 hours, the sensation in my leg comes and goes but is mild.

I have two root canals. I had a crown filed back in Feb. as it was slightly to high. The occipital headache resolved (chance?) I also have clicking in my right ear upon hearing certain sounds.

1.5 years ago I had TMJ, ear pressure and had a severe headache for

about 2 weeks as well as a 'sore' eye-muscle, as if I had been looking

upwards for a long time. Resolved with anti-inflammatory.

Now I have a burning sensation in my right foot, initially mild, but now stronger and in both my feet and constant.

1) Is there a possible correlation between the symptoms 1.5 years and my current symptoms?

2) Do 'UBOs appear in people who  do not have a

disaease?  Or does it mean: it could be MS, but we can't call it that because the criteria are not fulfilled...

3) What would be a differential diagnosis for these symptoms other than MS?

4)I read that root canals and silver fillings can lead to

mercury in the body and cause neurological symptoms. What specialist would look at these issues holistically?

Thanks a lot.

I cannot give you a clinical diagnosis over the internet, but I will try to answer your questions as best I can without seeing you or your scans

1) its potentially possible, its hard to tell (see above). Patients with MS can experience facial pain similar to trigeminal neuralgia, usually this comes and goes on a recurrent basis

2) UBOs are nonspecific and relatively common in the general population, especially as one gets older. The causes range from hardening of the arteries, stroke,  to migraine to vasculitis etc. The criteria for MS is not fulfilled by the presence of an old lesion that may or may not be due to MS

3) see Q2

4) This has not been scientifically proven. Mercury exposure from sources though can cause widespread neurlogical symptoms. I do not have information on a holistic source of information on this issue

Hello - I have the same symptoms as well as my tests being all normal and I was told by my neurologist that it is anxiety/stress.  My two front teeth are caps and was also wondering if they contain mercury.  I had the flu shot which also contains mercury but I was told from my doctors that is not the cause.  Unfortunatly I am still experiencing these symptoms and would also like an answer.

Many of my neuro. type symptoms eased up when my dentist and I decided to remove all the mercury type fillings from my mouth. I am in the process of major dental work. Some of the teeth were just removed becuse they had root canals, but I continued to have pain and I decided it was best for me ( the dentist wanted me to keep the teeth) But I know my pain and the teeth problems are also on the side where I have head pain. Not a cure, I know, but a step in the direction toward healing, I hope.

Good luck. Sandy in Fl
