Pain on right side- forearm hand and calf

by Pam`, Aug 08, 2005 12:00AM
I am having a lot of pain on the underside of my forarm up to elbow and down through first two fingers -also appears somewhat swollen or enflamed between frst two fingers on top of hand- i believe it's nerve damage in my radial &/Or ulnar nerves -also have pain in right calf- a burning sensation up the back of knee to back of lower thigh - all of this on right side- this has been going on since 9/04 - have had MRI, vascular Ultrasound, xrays and a multitude of blood tests- all negative but pain getting worse- have seen 2 neurologists an orthopedist and a chiropractor- am wondering if I should see neurologist again and get EMG on arm and calf? Should I see another orthopedist? a rheumatologist? any help/advice would be appreciated! thanx

I cannot give you a clinical diagnosis, and much depends on the history and clinical examination in your case, so my advice is somewhat limited

I'm not sure if you mean the little and ring fingers (which would suggest the ulnar nerve) or are referring to the medical terminology fingers one and two, which are the thumb and index finger (median nerve). Pain, swelling, and inflammation are not typical features of primary nerve injury - such as nerve compression or trauma. Perhaps there is some muskuloskeletal injury as well such as bursitis or joint problems. It would be fair to check for a nerve root compression or carpal tunnel syndrome (can cause pain up to the forearm also) by EMG or MRI at the neck or lumbar areas. EMG with symptoms of pain only is unlikely to be informative, except in the case of carpal tunnel syndrome. Depending on the appearance of the inflamed area further testing should be done to evaluate for more systemic disorders or a ?localized abcess or granuloma or neurofibroma. If no cause if found, causalgia or complex regional pain syndrom e may be a possible diagnosis, and best evaluated by a pain specialist.

Good luck
