Brain Absess and Seizure

by colemanjl, Oct 09, 2005 12:00AM
Took my 9yo step-daughter to the dr and she had her first seizure that we know of w/ the dr. She was admitted and they found she had such a bad sinus infectin that it began to go into her brain and caused a small absess. Her EEG showed seizure spikes and once she was treated w/ strong antibiotics for 4 days her absess was gone on the MRI.

Do you think the absess could have caused the seizures?

How much of a brain absess in a 9yo child could have left permanent damage or death? Her mom is trying to play it off like the infection was no big deal.

Any kind of abcess or lesion can irritate the surrounding brain and cause a seizure. Usually once the lesion is taken away the seizures do not recur adn anti-seizure medicaiton can be stopped within a few weeks. This is a relatively common phenomenom

I cannot comment on her case specifically but usually small abcesses once treated do not cause permanent injury. The underlying problem ie spread from sinuses needs to be treated appropriately so it does not happen again

Brain abcesses are usually treated for 14-21 days
