Disequilibrium and headaches

by Ephraim, Nov 24, 2005 12:00AM
I am 50 years old and in good health.  For a month I have been having periodic episodes of disequilibrium, I am not dizzy but when I have these attacks I have a slight feeling of being unbalanced and/or headaches. Although I never vomited, in the beginning I felt nauseous as well.  However, the nausua has stopped.  This phenomena usually occurs after I walk for a period of time, seems to be associated with movement and dissipates when I sit down or lie down. In the first few attacks I could not bend my head to look up without making it worse.  The headaches occur in different places in my head.  Sometimes in my far head, sometimes on the sides above my ears and sometimes on the top of my head.  When they are in the front the headaches feel like I have pressure in my head, on the sides it feels like my muscles are tense and on occasion there is pressure in my ears and my shoulders and back tighten as well. The attacks are periodic, occur more in the daytime and rarely at night.  I play basketball in a weekly weekend afternoon game and have continued with no problem.

My family doctor performed numerous blood tests and everything was well within normal.  He felt I could be suffering from a viral infection of my inner ear.  I went to an ENT, who suggested I have an ENG test and prior to examining me recommended I see a neurologist.  I have made an appointment with a neurologist and will see her in 2 weeks.  On top of it all I am very nervous about this phenomena.  My question is whether I am correct in seeing an ENT and Neurologist or should I see a different specialist.

The best type of doctor to see is a neurologist specializing in dizziness, an 'oto-neurologist'

they can do ENGs and other tests called videonystagmography to diagnose disorder like your and seperate out disorders of the inner ear, brain, or just neck muscles - any of which could be the cause of your symptoms, although nothing stands out as being directly brain related.

The Cleveland Clinic Oto-neurology Center can help if you so wish

Good luck

Thanks for asking your question, I am suffering from the EXACT same thing!  I was looking on here to see if anybody else was and for some advice.  If you read this, let us know how you made out at the Neuro.'s office and if you saw a Oto-Neouro., I never even knew they existed - thanks to the doctor for the response, now I know how to proceed also.  I have been to a GP, Optho-Neuro., ENT, Neuro. and Allergy Specialist and nothing.  However, I still suffer from the symptoms, so....must be somthing!

Jessegirl, my symptoms have somewhat alleviated.  I am still taking tests CT, Bera, ENG, etc.   I think the symptoms have dissipated somewhat because I cut out all foods and drink with aspartame.  I was drinking a lot of diet cola.  Good luck.
