i had a fall in june2005 had surgery for torn rotor cuff in dec.2005 i was having pain in my neck they did mri said i have chairi type 1 in 2004 had mri it did not show any thing could the fall cause chiari malformation. can any help me confused about it all

A fall does not cause a chiari malformation, it is developemntal

It is just a description of the fact that the base of the brain sags a little bit through the hole in the skull where the spinal cord meets the brain. In most poeple it is just an incidental finding on an MRI done for another reason (like you I suspect) and is nothing to worry about

Symptoms that would suggest that a chiari is causing a probelm (as some people need surgery on it) is eivdence of dysfunction of the cranial nerves and brainstem such as trouble swallowing, spasticity in the legs, clumsiness or incoordination of the limbs, etc.

I had surgery for Arnold Chiari Malformation in May of 2000. From what I have learned you can aquire this from an accident, but if that is the cause then after the trauma and swelling goes away so should the herniation. Chances are you already had the Chiari and the fall and subsequent MRI discovered it. Many people go their entire lives never showing symptoms of ACM, while other of us have either a slow or rapid onslot of symptoms.

can chiari malformation fall under workers comp.if you have been hurt on the job does anyone know i am under comp.now for a fall just had rotor cuff surgery . r.b

I don't think so because most chiari malformations are something you are born with. I wouldn't push it.... some may say that your chiari could of caused your balance to be off and caused the fall at work. The only acquired chiari malformations I have read about are those caused by repeated lumbar punctures (or shunt over drainage)and trauma like a bad car accident.
