Discogram

by MAXNROCKY, Mar 02, 2006 12:00AM
I have been told that my chronic back pain (Right Sciatic radiating down my right leg into my right medial calf) is Discogenic and that I should have a Discogram.  My questions are these:

1.   I have read where discogenic pain does not go below the knee.   2.   I have read very low specificity and sensitivity numbers for this test.   3.   Painful & Expensive.   4.  Surgical repair have low success rate.

Thank You so Much.

1) pain from a disc that compresses a nerve root. Some nerve roots supply the skin down the leg all the way from the arm to the fingers. So pain can be from below the knee

2) Discograms are controversial and not a generally accepted test.

3) correct

4) the success of surgical repair depends on the cause. A disc that is extruding and compressing a nerve root can be removed successfully, sometimes the success rate is lower

good luck
