Weakness/tingling in extremities

by pejr, Mar 27, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 47YO female.Migraines w/auras in my 30's.Severe neck/shoulder pain last 10 years & headaches different from migraine that would last for days.In 2003,acute pain in knees and hand/finger joints (symetrical) for a month. In 2004,woke up with jolt, everything black, shaking;felt i was being electrocuted;lasted 10 seconds. No residual effect.Severe knee pain upon use in Dec;xray said joint space narrowing.Zero arthritis in family.Woke up this Jan. to visual hallucination.Smoke detector lightlooked like fireworks;area would light up and I could see shadows in the background.Lasted 10 seconds. Also in January went on ERT and had incident of shade being pulled over one eye for 10 seconds;no residual effects.Went off ERT.Same thing happend when I was 29. 6 weeks ago;felt pain in knee/ankle joints (sharp pain like bat hitting my knee or foot)and soreness/weakness in both forearms and then wrists for 2 weeks.3rd week seemed to be acute attack;woke up profuse sweating & both arms deeply asleep; hands shaking uncontrollably.Next night woke up shaking and profuse sweating w/round hot spots on front of each ankle. From all this, bilateral foot/ankle weakness,Dizzyness and extreme sensitivity to light,Tingling/odd sensation that moves around all extremities and wrist and hand weakness that moves back and forth between hands.Hard to type with left hand;but then it would be fine.Occasional tremors and shaking. Some muscle twitching. All blood tests normal; RA,lupus,B12,etc.optic nerve normal. MRI, nerve tests this week. Question:Does this sound like MS or do you have any other ideas?

I cannot give you a formal medical diagnosis over the internet, as this website is purely educational

You seem to have a broad range of symptoms, none of which is particularly striking as being MS. MS is characterized by recurrent episodes of neurological dysfunction such as loss of vision in one eye (lasting days to weeks), weakness or clumsiness one one side of the body, double vision, among others.

It is encouraging that you MRI is normal and that there is no visible structual neurological disease. Neck and shoulder pain, elecgtric shock like sensations , and tingling in the extremities can come from neck problems, so check if you had a cervical spine MRI scan as well. A shade being pulled down in front of the eye can come from a small blood clot going to the eye artery so have your stroke risk factors assessed by your doctor. It can also occur with retinal problems (and may be more likely if it occurred when younger) so have your eyes checked too.

Good luck

I have for years had tingling in my legs and feet at night when i would get up and walk around a short time it would go away, but once back in bed a few minutes it would come back, i had trouble falling asleep due to this, fortunantly it was not a every night ordeal, once or twice a week usually, your condition sounds much worse but this may help regardless, 2 months ago i started a nutritional supplement with vitamins, over 60 minerals, mangosteen & aloe at a good friends request, in the 2 months since starting it I have only had one night with this tingling in my legs and feet, a GREAT Improvemnet to say the least, I also have to mention it has given me more energy every day and greatly reduced joint and lower back pain i was having(this is why i posted to you). :) I hope this info helps, Oh if your interested in the supplement you can email me for the information since I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a name here on the forum. :) Anyways good luck. Glad you had the spinal tap. It wasn"t bad right?? In MS they will look for oligbands and protein.  They go up in autoimmune problems.  Did they get blood work at the same time??  They screened my spinal fluid for spirochetes {lyme}. Mine tap was neg for both , but my rheum. is treating me for lyme.  Let us know how you made out
