Coccyx? Pain

by motheroftwo, Apr 19, 2006 12:00AM
Hi Dr,

I gave birth to my second daughter 5 years ago with no complication, ever since I have a severe pain near my coccyx (just to the left)only when pressure is applied, it doesn't hurt when standing or sitting. When I lay flat & lift my left leg I get very severe pain, The only way I can describe it is, it feels as though my bone has a crack in it and when pressure is applied it opens the crack and pinches a nerve.

Sorry for the poor description, any clue to what it could be, I know you cant diagnose me but any insight would be helpful.

Thank you

In the late stages of pregnancy and labour, everything is stretched a bit in that area (particularly if there is a prolonged or traumatic labor) - this could cause some trauma or strain to the soft tissue and ligaments in this area. Also it might result in a pinched nerve or nerve trauma that can result in a collection of pain nerve endings. This is conjecture as I dont know your case, but an MRI of this area might be revealing and rule out a 'neuroma' or soft tissue injury

Good luck

Jenny -- your symptoms sound the same as mine and I have been diagnosed with a 9 mm herniated disc at L4-L5.  I get that same feeling in my legs when I sit.
