Weak Muscle in leg

by Rob Bob, Apr 28, 2006 12:00AM
My wife is 53 and has problems with her thigh muscles. This all started about a month ago when she was doing  work in the garden. She got over heated, became very weak and faint. I helped her insid where she was able to cool off and gave her something for her nausea. For several day afer that she complained about sore thigh muscles in both legs. This continued for several days, On the 4th or 5th day she woke up with her legs weak. It is difficult for her to climb stairs and to rise from a sitting position. We had blood work done where her CK was 31585. The neurologist did a EMG which shows to have adnormal sounds. He said it appears to be only in the lower region of the motor neurons. More work such as GM-1, heavy metals, Lymes and others are being done. Also today we will have an MRI on the neck region. I see where he has a diagnosis for PMA. This I know is similar to ALS. We are very worried of the out come. We are scheduled for another EMG in July. Does ALS or PMA have this quick of an effect on a person. She had no problems befor the heat epersoide. She has periods of sore thigh muscles with over exertion still. The doctors does not seem to be concerned about the over heating when I mentioned it to him. Need some help on questions to ask the doctor durning our next visit.

I cannot give you a formal medical opinion over the internet unfortunately, as this site is purely educational

PMA is a very rare diagnosis and is not assocaited with that level of CK, so I would be wary of this diagnosis. What can happen with people who become dehydrated and overheated is called rhabdomyolysis - the muscle start to break down causing increased CK and muscle damage/weakness. There is usually no specific underlying disease, although sometimes there may be some genetic susceptibility. Because of this the msucle is 'irritated', and produces abnoraml sounds on EMG. The muscle may take a long time to heal. Prevention by keeping well hydrated and avoiding overheating is important as high CK s like that can also cause the kidneys to shut down.

This type of presentation can be seen in patients taking statin drugs for high cholesterol too.

Good luck

Question I forgot to ask. Can the heat episode cause a muscle problem for a month or more? Any medication possible for this?
