Fractured transverse processes

by crorec, Sep 26, 2006 12:00AM
I was injured in a motorcycle accident and fractured the transverse processes in my back at 3 different levels. I wear a back brace now for 2 months a boston brace it's called, I was just wondering what my prognosses is after recovery, should I expect any problems, limitations? I am 38 yrs old and in good shape before the accident, I also fractured my scapula, the processes are mildly/minimumly displaced. My back doesn't feel too bad at present but my sides are painful and weak with certain movements, the accident happened August 1, 2006 and I was thrown 50 feet and rolled another 50 feet and then was ran over by a truck in the opposite lane. I have had several injuries in my life being a carpenter and riding motorcross/road bikes and have made a full recovery so far w/o limitations.

First of all, keep in mind that I am unable to diagnose you because I am unable to examine you, this forum is for educational purposes.

The symptoms you describe with pain and weakness, suggest that you need a comprehensive look at your spine.  When certain area are injured, they can destabilize the spine.  Given the history you provided and the fact that you have fractured transverse processes, suggests that you encountered a major force to the spine (which can lead to future instability).  Another common problem with significant back injuries, such as yours, is the formation of a dural tear at the site of the fracture.  If the dura is breeched (covering of the brain) it can lead to a low-pressure state, subdural hematomas, headaches, imbalance and numbness/tingling.  I would recommend that you see a neurosurgeon to evaluate the stability of the spine, have an MRI of the affected areas of the spine, possible CT myelogram based on your symptoms.  An EMG in 3 weeks from the accident will also help determine the degree of any peripheral nerve damage (for example root avulsion) that may be contributing to your symptoms.  A good physical therapist will be critical for you, but first make sure your spine is stable and does not require suregery for long term stabilization (depends on the location of the injury and the extent).

I hope this has been helpful.
