Seizures?

by shaggy29, May 20, 2007 12:00AM
I've head a constant headache for 3 years, also I have these 'episodes' where out of nowhere I become dizzy (not lightheaded), but dizzy where things spin around, and I feel very afraid/out of control all of a sudden and very disconnected from reality.  It also feels like a strange headrush occurs all at the same time---then as quickly as it started, my awareness level is restored and I am left with increased heart rate, an odd feeling in my stomach, and sometimes tingling in my fingers and muscle twitches in various parts of my body.   I don't know what sets these "episodes" off - they seem random, but probably more frequent in an active environment. Also, there are times when I am in a famaliar situation, such as work, where I feel the opposite of deja vu  (like I've never been here before even though I know I have been here many times)

First of all, keep in mind that I am unable to diagnose you because I am unable to examine you, this forum is for educational purposes.
The symptoms that you describe are non-specific, but should be evaluated in a controlled setting.  The symptoms of 'headrush, stomach sensations and demi Vu can all be seen in temporal lobe epilepsy, but again are not specific for this disorder.  Most meningiomas are of no consequence, but they can on occassion cause seizures.  I would recommend that you go to a major academic institution and be seen by an epileptoligist (a neurologist with specialty training in epilepsy).  An EEG (brain wave test) can record your brainwaves during your episode and determine if you are having seizures.  However if your episode is not caught on the EEG, the test will be inconclusive.  You will likely require admission to an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) to collect 3-7 days of EEG to capture one of your spells.
I hope this has been helpful.

I've read your posting, and wanted to take some time to share my story, in the chance that it might help you.

Approximately 7 months ago, I found myself ( inexplicably) unable to flip an egg, this inability, was due to a tremor in my right hand ( not my left.. just my right), to make a long story short, this tremor took over my life, as it seemingly took over the right side of the trunk of my body( hand, arm, shoulder, neck and head). During the last seven months, I visited my Primary Care Physician ( blood tests), 2 Neurologists ( an MRI and an EEG both with "good and healthy results"), a Psychiatrist, an Accupuncturist, and not to leave any stone un-turned, a Naturopath.( blood tests and Saliva tests).

I was presricbed many medications, as well as began taking herbs and vitamins.. I took myself off of caffeine, as well as for a short period took myself, off of Splenda ( sucralose).. Long story short.. I started feeling much better, and assuming I had found the culprit ( Caffeine) I started drinking Decaf Coffee and Tea,  however the tremors, although greatly subsided, always came back! I started however, to get a warning, that an "epidode" was about to start.. a HEADACHE! The tremors also began to signal their end with a headache as well.. (Could be the Advil I was popping to alleviate the headache " that started it all " wore off).. However irritating the headaches were becomming the tremors were still showing an improvement, so again assuming that the lack of Caffeine had been a great benefit, I decided to re-introduce  Splenda..

Within a short period of time, the HEADACHES changed in nature, they became sharp stabbing pain in my temple, which would cause extreme dizziness ( to the point that it frightened me), and of course nausea. ( my primary care physician - couldn't find anything wrong with my ears) So I ran the the gambit again. PCP, Neurologist, and back to the Naturopath. To end my saga, I wanted to let you know that the results, of removing specific things from my diet ( Splenda ( sucralose) and Equal ( Aspartame) The tremors, the headaches, the "fuzzy memory", all of it GONE. Within days of no longer injesting either product, I was seeing improvement. Yet  within a week, I had what seemed to be a harmless cupcake at work, and within 2 1/2 hours, headache, dizziness and tremors.. they were all back... I again took approximately 14 days without it.. and this time deliberately injested the product, and again within 2 1/2 hours, all symptoms were back!

If by chance you are like I was for YEARS... and purchased any item at the grocery store that stated LIGHT, 25 percent less sugar, or the best selling point, CALORIE Free... I encourage you to do a bit of research on the products I have listed above, and it is my opinion, that my seven months of adventure was due to Splenda and Equal.
