Numbness and Tingling

by Amanda S., Aug 11, 2007 12:00AM
Hi- I'm not sure which topic this falls under. I have been experiencing tingling in my left thigh for several months. The tingling can be intense at times. Last week I noticed the top of my thigh is numb. Like numbness after a tooth is pulled from the novicaine. The tingling occurs white standing, sitting or laying down. I had a tiny bit of tingling in the tips of my fingers but not very often. Any ideas? Thank you so much! Amanda

Thanks for the email. Numbness only in the thigh can be from multiple causes but usually is related to some irritation of nerves from the lumbar spine area. There is a condition call meralgia paresthetica in which the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve  (sensory nerve that has already left the spine) gets irritated as it crosses the inguinal ligament. This usually results in numbness mostly in the lateral upper thigh area. It can be related to restrictive clothing or tight belts and obesity. The exam is usually very characteristic. You should see a neurologist and if appears that something else is going on then you may require an imaging study of your spine. Best of luck. GS

it may be from bad podture, or it may be a neurological problem,. I'd see a neurologist---if you go through testing and all is negative, it may just be something simple like poor posture, which can compress nerves

To: tingling on right side
since the end of june i've been experiencing a tingling sensation on the right side of my body. it started in both my legs, and within a 1/2 hr spread to my right arm (hand and below the elbow) and then to my face (from the right ear down the jawline to my mouth). On occasion my lips would tingle. Since then, these symptoms come and go. One day it's noticable and VERY annoying, the next day it's barely there. On top of that, for the past few weeks i've been having bad back aches and neck aches, which are very unusual for me.

I've been to the neurologist who said he doens't think it's a tumor or MS. However, he ordered a lot of test to be done...MRI, EMG, and extensive blood work. Haven't gotten the results back yet, but i'm worried. It's odd that this happening mostly on the right side of my body and in my two legs.

Hello, I have had problems since Dec. whe I moved.
I was finally diagnosed with Thyroiditis and Adrenal insuf.
However I am still having problems with numbess in my hands, pain in right leg numbness knee down (right leg) I had 2 MRI done and the first was bulging disc on lumbar and mild compression on sac. 2nd MRI showed no bulging dis or compression but now Facet joint disease and Disc degeneration from L3 to L5, the orthapedic group just wants me to keep doing theropy and come in for a cortizone shot, i already had my 3 epidurals with no releif. I can only walk for 15 minutes and i am in severe pain. Would this cause all the numb feelings and pain, I also get pain in the back of the neck everyday. The MRI of my C spine show a tiny bit of disc degeneration C5 which the said all them things are normal for my age (35) I am on Neurotin for nerve pain but it seems like I am having neuropathy issues now like my nerves move in different parts of my body all the time now, at night the leg gets nerve movements alot, and some in my arms. My feet keep feeling numb alot now also.

For the past month I have had numbness in my chin and left side of my face.  I have also have numbness in hands, mainly in my pinky though.  At first I thought it was an anxiety attack, but now I think it's more.  I believe the numbness made me have the anxiety attack, rather then the numbness being from the attack.  The attacks have stopped, but the numbness keeps getting worse.  I went to the doctors twice and the hospital once, and instead of attempting to figure out what it is they basically laughed at me because I'm only eighteen.  Could they be right, am I just losing it?  Is it possible it could be more?
Someone please Email me with some input?

It could be strss and or anxiety ! No you are not loosing it!  I'm not a doctor but its probably stress. I suffer anxiety and get tingles all the time. Like pins n needles. If you are that worried go to a neurologist for  some test like bell palsy (sp) It could just be poor blood cirulation . Don't wear really tight clothing or jewerly Talk with your doctor about your concern or a parent or gauradin school nurse someone who can be pro active for you and help you adress your concerns with a docter or neurologist.  If all else fails see a counsler maybe its anxiety

Hi~for several years now I have been experiencing head pains (not really headaches) more like a thrusting pain at certain parts of my head. I have not gone in for tests for fear of what they will tell me or find.  After having my daughter, 4 months ago, I started feeling numbness and tingling in my hands and arms. I thought perhaps this was the result of poor circulation because my daughter was sleeping on my arm but she is now in a crib and I am still experiencing it.  From time to time, i do sleep with my arm(s) under a pillow but I am not sure if this is the reason I am experiencing the tingle/numbness or if the head pains are related to it. I know ultimately I need to go in for tests but I am so afraid : ( My mom says that since I have had the head pains for some time now that its probably nothing serious or we would have known by now but I am not certain that is any type of logic. Any thoughts?
