I will like to know if any hope whatsoever for my aged mother. She is resident in Nigeria. She is diabetic and has had cataract suggery and yet could barely see. She has also had stroke in recent year. Her situation was described to me as retina detachment, implying complete blindness. Do l give up that she can never see again? Please help. I dont mind bringing her to US where l live if that will help. Thank you.

I'm very sorry to have to tell you that this type of question, especially one that involves considerable expense and the hardships of travel on an older, diabetic person cannot be answered with any certainty in a forum like this.

The possibilities run all the way from a simple procedure could restore the vision (if her eye does not have diabetic eye disease, the retina is not detached and the ONLY problem is a film behind the intraocular implant if one was used OR that many parts of the eye are severely damaged due to retinal detachment, diabetes, the effects of aging and/or optic nerve damage.

If there is anyway that she could see an ophthalmologist (Eye physician, Eye MD) in Nigeria that individual should be able to determine if referal to a sophisticated world class eye referral center would help.

Your overall description of her problems is not encouraging.

Good luck
