Dear Okaythen,

You are too nearsighted for LASIK surgery but you may be a good candidate for a Phakic lens implant.  This involves placing a special FDA approved implant inside your eye, in front of your natural lens.  You can do a google search for more information by looking for the STAAR implant called the Visian or the AMO implant called the Verisaye.  You will find a consumer web site from both companies that will explain the lenses and provide a list of possible surgeons in your area.  You can also be fit with either hard of soft contact lenses and yes you can swiitch between contacts and glasses.

for my severe near sighted is there anything I should pay attention to? I think like every half year I should get my eyes checked out? like there they use some liquid to make my eyes bigger so they can see my eyes better..what's that called and how often should I do it?

will contacts be ok for me? thinking about switching to contacts totally but wondering if it will be ok......will I get more eye problems in the future when I switch to contacts? thanks

Your high myopia puts you at risk for several eye problems as your get older including retinal detachment. Please use the search feature on this website to read previous postings about "retinal detachment" and "vitreous detachment".

Provide you are a careful and contientious wearer of contact lens you will see much better with contact lens than glasses because the image will be larger and there will be less optical aberrations.

See an ophthalmologist for a complete comprehensive medical eye examination and an indepth discussion of your suitability for wearing contact lens.

To: Temporary eye blindness when I wake up
I have been wearing contacts for about 10 years now. A couple of times when I have awaken I experienced temporary blindness in my right eye. It's was like one big white light and it lasted for a couple of minutes both times, and  gradually my vision returns. This was very scary to me, but both times I tried to remain calm in hopes of my vision returning and it did. Is this something I should get checked out?

It most absolutely needs to be evaluated. The causes could be relatively minor but there are some very serious things that might cause those types of symptoms. These include non-eye problems like heart, neurological and neck and head blood vessel problems. Please have it checked out starting with a comprehensive complete medical eye examination by an ophthalmologist (Eye MD).
