Legs shaking, Cold feeling, dry mouth. Hashimoto's hypothyroiditis, hiatal hern

by gypsikrys, Dec 10, 2005 12:00AM
46 yr old w/Past 6 yrs occasional frequent episodes about an hour or so after an evening meal of feeling cold, progressing to dry mouth legs start to shake uncontrollably.  Some tremors were so bad went to ER. BP high-ekg fine. I question if tremors are tetany of parathyroid problem, bp very high.  Sometimes during the worse episodes it was hard to concentrate.  Many times a little belching, passing gas, BM would provide some relief of symptoms until i got tired and could go to sleep.  Episodes started after being on Celexa antidepressant during bad relationship.  One md did workup for stress hormings in blood/urine, but it was ok. Initial diagnosis possible anxiety reaction, put on occasional xanax.  bad relationship ended, stopped celexa. I don't think its anxiety, episodes continued, still using occ xanax.  lack of appetite and difficulty eating enough sometimes. diagnosed with hiatal hernia by barium swallow.  I've been hypothyroid with hashimoto's thyroiditis for about 9-10 yrs (blood work good). left arm tingly or fuzzy in different areas but not every day.  Is all this a parathyroid problem, thyroid problem, digestive problem or emotional?  I'm not upset about anything, but these episodes.

Howdy,

The comment made, "There certainly are toxic people who can produce all sorts of poor health in others." is my experience.

I have been isolating myself as much as possible from people in the wake of recovering from intestinal cancer with favorable results. This also includes eliminating most phone calls and even newsgroup postings from about Dec.20 - Jan. 3, as holidays

are a stressful time for most people. I am unable to discern between toxic people and those who are not, so I solve that problem by distancing myself from everyone. Also noticed that it helps me to lay down and take a nap as soon as I get home from public situations. I have read in Prevention magazine that the immune system goes up 32% while sleeping and I do feel better after a nap. Also noted was that the immune system does 18% better with intersocial realating, but as yet, the only conversations that seem to be helpful are those with patient(not in a hurry), kind, with a sense of humor, and brings up original ideas, rather than simply responding in conversation. So far I have met very few of these non-stress people to converse with, although there seems to be a good chance that newsgroup people will fill the void, having more time to prepare what to write from the comfort of their own environ.

Merry Christmas

Your symptons are identical to mine.  I thought I was going nuts.  Two nights out of the last 10 at bed time I have had what I would describe as a severe panic attack.  My legs shake uncontrollably, I get really cold, I seem to lose the ability to think reasonably.  My jaw gets tight, my mouth dry.  I feel nausous and have a little gas.  Two or three other times but in the earlier evening I have had more mild but relatively similiar experiences.

This has scared me.  I have spent hours thinking and researching on line.  I drink alot of Diet Soda.  The two nights that I had the most severe episodes I was out at parties and drank Diet Coke all night, for several hours (no alchohol).

I will be 37 this month.  Work out 2-3 times and I am in good physical condition.  I am curious if you drink alot of diet drinks?

Wow!! I thought I was the only one who experienced these "shaking" attacks! I am a 28 y/o female, 118 lbs.
It usually happens about once every 3 weeks or so. I will be lying in bed and all of a sudden I become VERY nauseous, dry mouth and then the shaking/muscle tremors start. Usually lasts about 30 mins. to an hour when I will burp/pass gas and then I am fine. Scares the daylights out of me. I though it was a hypoglycemia attack so I tested with my husbands glucose monitor during one of these "attacks" but was within normal range. I mentioned it to my dr. and he looked at me like I had a 3rd eye or something. He had me do a fasting glucose test--normal. I have other symptoms as well--dizziness/balance issues, nausea, random muscle twitches are the others. I have had my Gallbladder removed, scans, endoscopy--diagnosed with chronic gastritis, blood test after blood test, all come back negative. Has me puzzled beyond belief!!
I honestly thought I was the only one who experienced these attacks, but am happy to know that I am not alone on this one!

im worried. this happened 2 weeks ago and hasent stopped. im only 12, and on the 15th (the night it started) i shaked in my bed uncontrolablly like a shivery feeling - i was so scared. hard to sleep and it happened throughout and still is (a little bit). i get scared at points and anxious. do you think its a cold mixed with an anxiety symptom? i dont want a life-long health problem =(. some points i might think i have a seizure, and my head itches...

I have this hapen and the obnly answer I've ever heard is ANXIETY. Whether you think so or not anxiety can take your body into a hypoglycemic type state that isn't dangerous. That is why it comes and goes and most people don't show on the glucose tests. Just what I was told.

Its good to know Im not the only one experienceing this! It all started about 4 months ago and is becoming more frequent. It can happen at any time of the day. I get episodes where i just shake uncontrollably. it starts in my legs but gets so bad that the rest of me shakes too, i get dizzy and feel like passing out. i cant put it down to anything i am eating or drinking and i have been unable to diagnose it because i dont really have any other symptoms. i just want it all to stop because it scares me and anyone who witnesses it.

It was really hard to pinpoint this one but the root problem seems to be hiatal hernia. The moment I fall asleep, the diaphragm relaxes and my stomach slides up into my chest. This puts pressure on the Vagus nerve (just my theory, not proven), and all hell breaks loose. I get rapid, bizarre heartbeats, there is a brutal rush of adrenalin ( cortisol
