When they did the surgery they found that the problem was far more complicated than they had thought. They found he had a long pointy bone spur that was pressing on nerves in his back. They ended up having to remove half of the vertebra, the bulging disc and the bone spur. They said the area was severely inflammed so they injected it with antibiotics and steroids to help reduce the inflammation. His dr told him after the surgery that he'll probably need another surgery within 5 years to have a plate put in (I don't fully understand why though). It's been 6 months and he still has problems with sciatic pain (he's only 29).
Is chiropractic care an option for you?

Another thing, cronic pain messes with your brain, my mom was told to go see a shrink, and this made her mad because she thought the doc thought that she really wasn't in as much pain. Turns out though that people that suffer from cronic pain do benifit from talking to a shrink. A pain specialist. The only thing that has helped her out a little is getting acupuncture.
