Question Title: Ureter collapseForum: The Urology Forum
| |
3 years ago I had colin cancer and had a colostomy. Since then the scar tissue caused my left ureter to collapse. A stint was placed but had to be changed every 3 mos. as calciun deposits collected and caused infections. Last Dec. the Doctor tried to repair the ureter by packing it in scar tissue hoping to protect it. This operation was unsuccessful and he found that both my ureters are collapsed. A stint was placed in my right ureter by due to swelling they were unable to do the left one. My left kidney is currently being drained through a catheter and my dr. is unable to come up with a better solution. I am unwilling to endure a second bag. Is there some other proceedure to either protect the ureter or some form of by-pass. Please advise ASAP or suggest someplace else I can ask. Thank you!
= Dear John, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are several options for you depending on the amount of small bowel you have and whether or not there is significant function of the left kidney. One would consider performing an ileal ureter procedure if the kidney functions well. If there is minimal function, removal of the right kidney to prevent infection would be a viable option. Creation of an ileal ureter entails creation of a conduit from the undiseased portion of your ureter to the bladder. This is a complicated procedure. You may be a candidate if you are disease-free from colon cancer and your colon-rectal surgeon and oncologist feel you are fit enough to undergo this procedure. With respect to your left kidey creation of an ileal ureter may be an option as well. However, if this is your main functioning kidney, stent change is not a bad option depending on the prognosis of your colon cancer. There are many urologists who would be happy to help you with your problem.
