Question Title: Allergic to semen

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Urology - General

Is it possible for a woman to be allergic to a man's semen. If I ejaculate inside my wife, she gets a buring pain after sex, her vagina becomes swollen, and very dry and sex a second time that day is very painful for her, but if we use a condom, we can have sex many times in one day without any irritation. We tried KY Jelly and alike, but it does not help, the only thing that seems to help is if I do not ejaculate inside her (without a condom). What may cause this - could she be allergic?

Dear RPJ,
It is indeed possible to develop an allergic reaction to semen. This has been reported in literature, however , it tends to be an uncommon condition. The presumed mechanism for this is thought to be through a form of antibody(IgE) mediation. It is also possible to develop irritation from the use of oils and lubricants . In order to establish a diagnosis of allergy to semen you need to be seen by an allergist for a work-up. You may call (313)982-8272 for an appointment. Meanwhile, you should continue to use condom barriers to prevent any further reactions.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
