Question Title: 'Clear Discharge'

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Urology - General

I have noticed over the past year or so that when I get an
erection, either through masterbation or by being arroused by a
woman, that my penis 'discharges' a totally clear semi-syrupy
liquid. This also happens sometimes when I urinate, although not
as often. Can you please explain this, and should I be seeing a
doctor about it?

Thanks,

Dear Eric,
The penis itself has lubricants to keep the urine channel moist. The fluid tha is secreted from the small glands that line the urethra(glands of Littre) are active at all times. These glands often secrete a clear fluid like you mention but unlike semen, it doesn’t contain sperm.
On the other hand, a clear discharge could be the sign of a sexually transmitted disease(Chlamydia). This infection is often unrecognized in the male but is said to have a clear discharge. The only way to diagnose it is through a culture. I wouldn’t reccommend running out to get a culture, unless you had a suspision or a number of risk factors.
Another type of infection that can produce a clear discharge is a prostatitis. This is an infection of the prostate gland that often has multiple uncomfortable symptoms associated with it. You would know if you had prostatitis.
