Question Title: Question on Urinary tract infectionForum: The Urology Forum
| |
My daughter had major surgery when she was 10 years old to correct a Reflux problem that it seems she was born with. One side of her bladder was reconstructed and new valves made. She is now 18 years old and has not had any problems with her yearly checkups however she has just gone away to college and is having problems which sounds to me like bladder infection. The reflux problem left her with a weak kidney. She is experiencing low abdomin pain, some back pain and she is unable to urinate. She also said that it feels like something is falling out when she trys to urinate Amis
______ Dear Amy, It sounds like your daughter is having urinary tract infections and she needs to be careful. You said that one of her kidneys is weak, I can only assume that there was some scarring of the kidney in question when she was young and the function is diminished. It is true that you only need one kidney to survive, but you need all the reserve function you can retain. Particularly, if she is having fever, chills, and flank(back) pain. I would suggest that she is seen by a doctor who can assess her kidney function, current infectious status, possiby provide her with antibiotics to prevent future infections and assess her current difficulty urinating. She could go back to the urologist who performed the ureteral reimplant or find a new urologist at school. This is a serious matter and should not be dealt with lightly.
