Question Title: What do these symptoms suggest?

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Urinary Tract Infections

In June, I had a UTI diagnosed. I have been treated with Ofloxin, falgyl, a sulpha drug, doxycyline (sp?), and 3 courses of Zithromax. My ob/gyn has at various times suspected mycoplasma (my culture was lost by the lab) and now thinks it is a dermatological problem. My symptoms are: frequency, burning around the urethera, only passing small amounts of urine, extreme fatigue to the point of not being able to life my arms some days, and burning sensation in the palms of my hands. The only medication I take is Premarin and mevacor. I am undecided whether to see an internist or urologist? My question is, what do these symptoms suggest and what type of physician should I see?
Thank you!

Dear PC,
I think you should probably see your internist first. He or she can determine if seeing a urologist for these irritative symptoms is necessary. I think you need to first have a urine analysis and a culture performed and see if the culture is positive after the antibiotics you have taken. This multitude of antibiotics would be plenty to treat almost any uncomplicated UTI. If the urine culture is positive then a urologist could help you determine why. If your urine culture is negative and your symptoms persists, then you may also want to see the urologist to make sure you don’t have an inflammatory condition of the bladder, known as Interstitial Cystitis. This condition is usually associated with pain at anytime of the day but can also include some of the fatigue type symptoms to which you alluded. There are several entries on the Forum regarding this problem, you may want to look up a few of the responses and gain some more information.
