The facts...healthy 27 year old heterosexual male with virtually inactive sex life. For the past 4 or 5 months, I have noticed a small amount of blood in my semen pre and/or post ejaculation via masturbation. There is no pain associated with this nor any changes with my normal being. For example, my testes are not enlarged or anything. The only thing unusual is the blood. It does not occur every time...maybe 1 in 5. I average masturbation about once a week. I would go to my doctor, but I am currently unemployed, uninsured, and broke. Any thoughts on the matter? I will see a physician as soon as I am able.

Dear Gordon,
The medical term for your bloody semen is hematospermia or hemospermia. This is usually not a serious problem and is usually self-limited (ends on its own). The present thinking is that individuals such as yourself should have a good history and physical examination. Some of us examine prostatic secretions and recommend a prostate ultrasound for completeness sake.
Good luck!
