| kidney stone history, last two years frequent uti and bladder infections. on numerous kinds of antibiotics without relief of infections. is there a possibility it might be bladder cancer, does not run in family. need advice on cure.
Dear Colleen Thanks for your questions. A UTI work-up is the same for bladder cancer. An IVP ( kidney dye Xray test) and cystoscopy ( look into the bladder with a lighted telescope) identifies stones, tumors, a poorly emptying bladder, outpouchings of the bladder ( diverticulae) which don’t drain well or a connect between the bowel and bladder. Finding of interstitial cystitis could also be seen. If no abnormalities are found and infections are not associated with sexual intercourse. chronic suppressive antibiotics are usually started. Also urinary incontinence and constipation can be controlled medically. This usually breaks the cycle of infections and a trial off antibiotics can be attempted at about 6 months. Good Luck! More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.
