Question Title: Calcium Channel Blockers and kidney stones

Forum: The Urology Forum
Topic: Kidney/Urinary Stones

I have a long history (20 years) of chronic formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones. I was also recently diagnosed with HTN. My doctor has started me on a Calcium channel blocker to treat the HTN. My question, what affect do Calcium Channel Blockers have on kidney stone formation, if any? Thank you.

Dear Nancy
Thanks for your question. Calcium channel blockers have not been shown to directly increase or decrease the risk of kidney stone formation. Your urologist may perform a metabolic stone work-up to find the cause of your stone production and then prescribe a medication to help prevent further stone formation. in the meantime remember to drink plenty of water, day and night, enough to keep your urine the color of water. When your urine is yellow, your are forming stones!
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
