Question Title: Post op surgery for removal of stoneForum: The Urology Forum
| |
I HAVE HAD THREE PROCEDURES IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS TO REMOVE A LARGE STONE. I HAD LITHOTRIPSY WHICH BROKE THE STONE BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. MY UROLOGIST THREE WEEKS LATER REMOVED THE STONE VIA UROSCOPE. HE PLACED A STENT IN THE RIGHT SIDE AND THREE WEEKS LATER I RETURNED TO HIS OFFICE FOR THE REMOVAL OF STENT AND TO NO AVAIL HE COULD NOT REMOVE IT IN THE OFFICE. HE WANTED TO SEDATE ME AT THE HOSPITAL THE NEXT DAY FOR REMOVAL OF STENT. WHEN HE WAS DOING PROCEDURE HE FOUND THAT THE STENT HAD REVERTED INTO THE RIGHT KIDNEY AND WHERE THE TISSUE FROM THE REMOVAL OF THE STONE WAS HEALING AROUND THE STENT. THEREFORE I WAS BROUGHT OUT OF SEDATION AND MY DOCTOR CAME TO ME AND TOLD ME THAT HE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO DO AN INCISION TO REMOVE THE STENT. WHEN HE DID WAS DOING THE PROCEDURE HE ALSO NEEDED TO REPAIR MY BLADDER. A KNEW STENT HAS BEEN PLACED AND THREE WEEKS WILL BE UP ON NOV. 1. I HAVE AN APPT TO HAVE IT REMOVED IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. I AM RECOVERING FROM THE SURGERY BUT I DO HAVE SOME DISCOMFORT ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND ALSO I HAVE A SQUEEZING OR SPASM IN MY RIGHT KIDNEY FROM TIME TO TIME. IS THIS NORMAL? ALSO A GREATER CONCERN TO ME IS I AM HAVING A LOT OF MUCUS AND BLOOD IN MY STOOL. I DO HAVE AN IRRITABLE BOWEL BUT AM WONDERING IF THE SURGERY ITSELF OR THE STENT IS CAUSING A FLAIR UP OR SOMETHING IS MAJORLY WRONG. PLEASE GIVE ANY ADVICE YOU CAN THANK YOU ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Diana, My understanding of your situation is that after having failed passage of a stone fragment that was crushed by ESWL, your urologist had to perform ureteroscopy and stone basketing to remove the stone fragment(s), and left a stent. Apparently the stent migrated upward towards the kidney, requiring removal of the stent in the operating room (possibly through another ureteroscopy). At this point the story is not entirely clear to me. My understanding is that in the process of attempting this, a stricture or some type of tight area was encountered which was attributed to healing of the previously manipulated tissues around the stent necessitating some type of incision to be performed in the ureter (?) or at the ureteral orifice at the bladder (?). In any case, because a new incision was made, a new stent had to be placed to allow healing of the tissues around the stent. I am not sure what type of bladder repair became necessary in the process. Was this some type of open surgery requiring an open incision, or was this all done through the scope? Although I don’t have all of the data, I’ll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. The intermittent squeezing sensation or spasm you describe in the right kidney is normal due to presence of the stent. You may also experience spasms in the bladder with a stent. However, the bloody stools with increased mucous production is not considered a normal consequence with the scenario you described and should not be related to presence of the stent. This may be related to your history of irritable bowel, although I can not say it isn’t related to your urological history for sure because I have not been present for your operations and have not been involved in your care. I hope this answers some of your questions and wish you the best. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.
